Hey guys! Hope your Memorial Day weekend is off to a great start!

Last night we helped our friends move into their beautiful new home. It was a perfect night (weather wise especially!) to do so. After the moving fun was over, we ordered pizza, enjoyed a few beers, and sat out by the bonfire. First bonfire of the season – love it! :)

Remember yesterday when I was talking about how great I felt after having a beer and burger out with my friend (compared to how I normally feel)? Yep, that was definitely not the case last night. I had two Spotted Cow’s, along with some pizza from a local pizza joint.

I haven’t had pizza in at least a few weeks now. Last night I had sausage, pepperoni, and chicken with buffalo sauce, canadian bacon with extra cheese, and mashed potato pizza – whoa! Between the pizza and beers, my body was not loving me. I was lethargic, groggy, bloated, and gassy (is that TMI?).

I was reflecting on how great I felt on my 10-day detox, and I really don’t want to just jump back into my old ways (although I don’t usually drink regular beer or eat pizza, or at least not together!). I also don’t want to have to be as restrictive as I was for those 10 days. There’s a happy medium, and it’s always a work in progress to get there. :)

Before we head out to golf and up to a friend’s parent’s lake house later (hello, summer!), I thought I’d squeeze in a quick post about one of the products that helped me survive the 10 days of no sugar (and thus, no chocolate!).

TerrAmazon Raw Organic Cacao Nibs.

These cacao nibs are what helped me survive those first days when all I wanted was a piece of chocolate (although, by Day 9 I found some chocolate that didn’t contain sugar!).

Cacao nibs are made from cacao beans (or cocoa beans as more commonly referred). I explain more about these in Day 1. They have 11 grams of fiber and 4 grams of protein per serving (and no sugar!).

The almost chocolate.

And they are delicious. Not to mention an awesome addition to this smoothie that I can’t stop raving about.

Alright guys, that’s it. Have a great rest of your weekend!

Product Review: Udi’s Gluten-free Original Granola

1365

Although cereal was once my all-time favorite breakfast food, yogurt with granola (and fresh berries if I’ve got them!) has been climbing the ranks, and quickly! Especially since I’ve found Udi’s Gluten-free Original Granola. Now let’s be real, most granola (being it is made with oats) is gluten-free. However, Udi’s is an all-natrual gluten-free brand that makes everything from pizza crusts to bread to you guessed it, granola. And man is theirs  delicious! Unlike ordinary granola that can be quite boring, Udi’s Original includes raisins, banana chips, walnuts, cashews, almonds, and even pistachios! Seriously, yum. Udi’s Granola also comes in Vanilla, Cranberry, and Au Naturel (think regular granola). Check it out if you’re ready to ramp-up your granola experience!

And check out http://udisglutenfree.com for other products and recipes too!

And if you prefer gluten-free, take a look at my Barbecue Chicken Pizza recipe. Made on one of Udi’s gluten-free pizza crusts!

Product Review: Udi’s Gluten-free Pizza Crust

udis

Although I don’t have a wheat allergy (or at least not that I know of!) or gluten sensitivities, I do believe that there is such a thing as eating too much gluten (a protein found in wheat and related grains such as barley and rye). Because if you are eating a lot of gluten that also means you are eating a lot of carbohydrates (from grains). And a lot of carbohydrates from grains probably means that you aren’t eating enough protein and healthy fat. Or possibly enough fruits or vegetables. I know people who swear that giving up gluten (and thus the carbohydrates that include this protein) has increased their energy levels and helped them lose weight.

Although I have yet to be inclined to give up all wheat and related grain products (and most likely never will!), I occasionally buy (and enjoy!) gluten-free products. Sure there are a few products I do not enjoy or recommend, but there are also a few products I do truly like just as much (or almost as much!) as their gluten-filled counterparts. One of those being Udi’s Gluten-free Pizza Crusts.

Udi’s Gluten-free Thin & Crispy Pizza Crusts come in a pack of two. They have a very nice texture with a good crunch. A half a pizza contains 160 calories, and 4 grams of fiber. They are not only gluten-free, they are also soy-, dairy-, and nut-free! The only downfall is that these pizzas only have 1 gram of fiber per serving, a lot less than some of the whole-grain pizza crusts out there. However, if you are looking for a light, crunchy, gluten-free pizza crust, this is one of the best store-bought gluten-free brands out there.

Check them out if you are trying to eat less gluten, or if you do have a gluten-sensitivity and need a good gluten-free pizza crust. Can be enjoyed using the oven or grilled – just add your favorite toppings beforehand! :)

Product Review – Function: Alternative Energy Drinks

AEdrink

Being outside in the sun all day can really wear a person out. Add in a few adult beverages, being on your feet, and not drinking enough water and you are guaranteed to have a case of exhaustion on your hands!

This weekend Grand Old Day was celebrated in St. Paul, MN. A great time was had by (almost!) all. But afterwards, hydration and energy were surely needed. That’s where Function: Alternative Energy came in.

In a previous post I did a write-up on Function: Urban Detox, a drink essentially made for hangovers. Function: Alternative Energy drinks are made to provide energy without crashing (like a lot of energy drinks can do!). Natural stimulants Muira Pauma, Guarana, Yerba Mate, and Catuaba are supposed to kick in at different times, giving you sustained energy. Think of Function: Alternative Energy as an all-natural Gatorade (which contains multiple artificial additives as mentioned in the Function: Urban Detox post – yuck!).

I never grew up drinking a lot of Gatorade, but I bought a couple Function: Alternative Energy drinks on sale at the co-op and had the boyfriend try one out on Sunday. As a former Gatorade drinker, he enjoyed the all-natural alternative. I had a couple sips and was also pleasantly pleased!

Function: Alternative Energy drinks come in the following flavors: Tropical Citrus, Strawberry Guava, and Acai Grape. Try one out the next time you’re in need of a boost!

Product Review: Evol Veggie Fajita Burrito

Ever had one of those weeks where you just can’t seem to find the time to make dinner? Of course you have. Between work, social obligations (OK, maybe obligations isn’t the right word to describe a birthday dinner for one of my most favorite friends), and coaching traveling soccer, life has been full of rushing around this week (and it’s only Wednesday!).

Last night I decided to run home to catch a yoga class and grab a few groceries before soccer practice. Being as hungry as I was after sweating it out for 60 minutes, I bought a lot of things I probably wouldn’t have normally at the co-op (you know what they say about grocery shopping when you are hungry!). Luckily for me, an Evol Veggie Fajita Burrito was one of those purchases. Now normally I try to stay away from frozen food if possible, being a lot of freezer section packaged meals have been heavily processed and thus are more likely to contain artificial additives (not to mention they just aren’t as tasty as made-from-scratch cooking!). Evol Burritos however, are all-natural and most are made with 70-80% organic ingredients – how awesome!

By the time I got home and unloaded the groceries, I only had a few minutes before I had to head out the door again. Although I normally save frozen meals for the days when I don’t have anything good to bring for lunch to work, I wasn’t able to find anything of substance in the fridge for dinner. The quick 2-minute cook time on the Evol Burrito was perfect!

Leaving my hopes for a nutritious and satisfyingly tasty dinner at the door, I took the first bite as I headed to my car. To my surprise, the Evol Veggie Fajita Burrito surpassed my expectations. Now I’m not saying it was the best burrito I’ve ever had (luckily there are lots of delicious authentic Mexican restaurants where I’m from), but compared to other frozen burritos in the past these ones are definitely worth giving a try.

The Evol Veggie Fajita’s all-natural ingredients include red and green bell peppers, black beans, brown rice and a roasted tomato and corn salsa all rolled into a whole-wheat tortilla – yum! The fact that the Evol Veggie Fajita burrito is only 290 calories with 10 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber is something worth smiling over.

Find Evol burritos in your local co-op, health food store, or participating grocer’s freezer section. Evol also makes frozen pizzas, flatbreads, and bowls.

Check out the other flavor burritos too!

Product Review – Function: Urban Detox drinks

Urban_Detox_Citrus_Prickly

Last Saturday was Cinco De Mayo. It was also girls’ night. Between the champagne to celebrate a friend’s engagement and the beers to celebrate Cinco De Mayo, the next morning I was in need of something to quench my thirst. However, I was looking for something other than a sport/electrolyte drink with the artificial additives that come with most (Gatorade’s ingredients include brominated vegetable oil, high fructose corn syrup, and artificial colors – yuck!).

A couple of weeks a go I bought a Function: Urban Detox drink from my local co-op. It had been sitting in my fridge saving up for a morning when I really needed it, and Sunday it was. I love that it gets its color and flavor all naturally. There was no funky after-taste either. And at 100 calories for the entire bottle, that’s something I can get excited about!

Next time you’re in need of a little pick-me-up the morning after a few too many drinks, consider trying a Function: Urban Detox drink. It comes in three flavors: Pomegranate Cherry, Goji Berry, and Citrus Prickly Pear.

This drink includes Prickly Pear Extract, shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, and the antioxidant N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine, known to help liver and lung function. See below for all ingredients.

Look for Function: Urban Detox drinks at your local co-op, health food store, or participating grocery store.

Function: Urban Detox (Pomegranate Cherry)

Ingredients: Water, Cane Sugar, Citric Acid, Purple Carrot Juice Concentrate (natural color), Natural Flavor (natural fruit extracts), NaCl, Calcium Carbonate, N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine, Prickly Pear (Opuntia Ficus-Indica) Extract, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vit B6), Magnesium Oxide, Niacinamide (Vit B3), Folic Acid, Cyanocobalamin (Vit B12)

Check out Function’s website for information on some of their other drinks (blog product reviews to come!) at: http://www.functiondrinks.com/link.php?pageID=partyseason
